Social Justice
Unitarian Universalists have a strong history of social action, both in their local community and on broader national and international issues. Members of the Halifax Congregation have, over the years, been very active in such organizations as the Voice of Women (peace initiatives), support for HIV/AIDS victims, performing same sex marriages since 1976, becoming a Welcoming Congregation, supporting the right to medically-assisted death, supporting Hope Cottage (soup kitchen) and various environmental initiatives.
Currently, UUCH social responsibility is focused on:
- Environmental issues
- LGBTQ issues – The Pride Parade Committee
- Food insecurity – Christmas hamper drive, UUCH neighborhood food bank, Saturday neighbourhood brunch
- International rights issues
- Actively being a participant in truth and reconciliation;
- Working on understanding racism on a individual and institutional level;
- Supporting refugees and newcomers (LINK TO SECTION ON REGUGEES SAH)
- Other initiatives are brought forward by individuals or addressed as the need arises.
